LINCOLN, ABRAHAM

A one page document signed by Lincoln as President, appointing David Phillips of Illinois to be the U.S. Marshall for the Southern District of Illinois. Signed on March 30th, 1861, during Lincoln’s first month in office. Also signed by Secretary of State, William Seward. David Phillips was a Baptist Minister, abolitionist, and editor of the Illinois State Journal. Like Lincoln, he too is buried in Springfield, Illinois. At the top of the document in large print, it reads, “President of the United State of America,” under Lincoln’s name in calligraphy. With an embossed Presidential seal at the lower left and a dark, clear, and full, “Abraham Lincoln” signature at the lower right. A handsome piece. $9,850.
