A beautifully engraved ship’s passport has been signed by Jefferson, as President, and by James Madison, as Secretary of State. A harbor and lighthouse scene adorns the top of the document, where there is also a unique scalloped border, which had acted as an anti-counterfeiting device. This document requested safe passage for a merchant ship called the “Mary Jane,” that was staffed with twelve men and no guns. Signed on October 12th, 1806. A handsome display piece! $9,250
