JEFFERSON, THOMAS

A one page document signed by Jefferson as President, appointing Samuel Miller a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, on June 1st, 1808. Cosigned by Secretary of the Navy, Robert Smith. Beneath a large eagle vignette at the top, is the heading, “The President of the United States,” in bold script, and there is a military hardware scene depicted at the bottom. Adorned with an embossed Presidential seal. Naval appointments signed by Jefferson are difficult to come by, as the Navy was only in its infancy at the time of his Presidency.  $8,950.
